Webster (Daniel) statue is dedicated.
September 27, 1859
Artist: Hiram Powers. The second version of the statue (the first was lost at sea while being shipped from Leghorn), it is located on the grounds of the State House. Its installation is protested by abolitionists – particularly Horace Man – because of Webster’s advocacy for preserving the union even at the cost of continuing slavery. A state of Mann is installed nearby in 1865.*
